The world is a small place now. Travel has become easier and faster than ever before. But we are humans after all. We have the tendency to either blame the past or crave for something in the past. There was a time when a plane ride was the most desirable mode of travelling for anyone since all couldn’t afford it. The idea of floating among the clouds was so thrilling! As the plane soared high up in the sky, the buildings became match boxes. The roads looked like tiny zigzagging snakes and the view of the whole city dotted with tiny gold and silver lights was mesmerizing. And ah the comfort! Nothing could beat it. The idea of saving a huge chunk of time made it the most desirable mode of travel.
As time passed, plane rides have become affordable and that aura has diminished. It has become basic inviting a whole lot of complaints. The space is less and congested. Sitting in one position is torturous. The ears are suffering. Food has no variety. You look outside the window and there are only clouds…only clouds for 2 hours!
The old world charm of trains is making a comeback, especially with new age kids. There are long berths where you can sleep, sit, dance, jump or climb up and down a berth! There is no compulsion to get tied to a seat. The window has a special charm. The view of the passing fields, tress, rivers, bridges and different landscapes doesn’t bore you down. Food is the best part. The hawkers with little baskets at every station offer such variety of foods that its mind blowing. As the train crosses different states, the food also changes according to the cuisine of that state. Chips, biscuits, peanuts, boiled eggs, cold drinks, candies, cookies, tea, coffee… you name it and you get it! You can either enjoy music in your earphones while watching the view from the window or lie down with a book in hand or better get lulled to a sweet sleep with the rocking motion of the train. For adults it gives a much needed long pause from the hectic life nowadays. Just to sit back and relax or find solace in the company of others without any daily life schedules to follow is a bliss. The journey is long but adventurous for sure.
Life changes, moves and comes back to a full circle. A chugging train ride is definitely high on the most adventurous and thrilling ride for now.
